Clearing up Cholesterol Confusion

Last week, I jumped on Facebook LIVE to discuss a very controversial and hot topic, cholesterol. Arguably one of the most confusing topics in the nutrition and health world.

With good reason… the history and miscommunication around this topic is fascinating, yet infuriating! Popping a statin drug simply because your doctor prescribed it to you is, quite frankly, irresponsible. You should understand how biology & the body works (and if you did, you'd likely refuse the pills)

You see, cholesterol is necessary for the body to function properly. It's the precursor to our hormones (hello stress, hormonal balance, and libido!) it's needed to produce Vitamin D, and it helps to create bile (which we need to digest fats).

Better yet, your body makes cholesterol to the level that you need in response to inflammation in the body. Foods rich in cholesterol, which can only be animal foods like eggs and red meat (plant foods do not contain cholesterol), will have little to no impact on your blood levels of cholesterol.

Let me repeat that: cholesterol that you eat has little to no impact on your blood cholesterol levels.

I know, crazy, right?! Avoiding egg yolks won't magically lower your cholesterol levels because that's not how the body works in the first place!

I have oh-so-much more information for you in this week's video and blog post. Learn the truth about cholesterol, HDL/LDL, triglycerides, and what statins won't do >

Highlights from Instagram – Motivational Posts

In an effort to be as transparent as possible, (because we all know how *perfect* social media feeds can make someone seem), I'm attempting to share more of my own story here in ways that I think make sense. . 2001: after college, working a 9-to-5 for corporate America at Gap, Inc. and completely unsure of my purpose or my passion. I also had a side business making and selling jewelry from semi-precious gemstones and sterling silver. This was my highest weight, about 25 pounds heavier than I am now and nowhere near as strong. Note that the wine glass was in my grandmother's hand who is cropped out of the photo, not mine. I've never been a big drinker. . 2007: I had been living in San Francisco for maybe 1.5-2 years and running a lot and doing Turbo Kick probably 4-5 days a week (in the height of its glory, there was no shortage of great classes here in SF). This was before I trained for a half marathon, so I probably got considerably leaner than this photo, but I don't have photos from that time because I was mostly not that social. This was shortly before I experienced adrenal fatigue for the first time, which was a few months after that photo was taken, on the heels of losing my period for at least 2 months. My best guess is 10-15# lighter than I am now. . 2016: While I love to be on a journey of self-improvement in a lot of ways all the time, I am confident, happy, and comfortable in my own skin. I had a really hard year emotionally last year with the passing of my grandmother and a low back injury that kept me mostly out of the gym from early in the year until after we moved west in August. In 2015, about 10 pounds found their way onto my 5'4″ frame and it took me 3-6 months of focusing on myself and my health to allow it to fall off. This photo was taken in September, many months after that weight came off. . I don't know exactly what the point of this post is other than to show you, and to share with you, that I've been there. I've had hard times and I've made things hard on my body unintentionally. So when I give advice, it's from experience all over the place. #transformationtuesday

I have a lot of friends out there doing amazing things. Heck, I even have competitors out there who aren't my friends doing amazing things. Guess what? I'm happy for them all. . You see, while some people may view being in a similar/the same business as a big competition that needs to be cut-throat, and that's fair to a degree, I honestly think there's room for us all. . I don't think my success takes away from anyone else's success. I also don't think theirs takes away from mine. . If anything, it more often has a compound effect. When someone learns about Paleo, for example, through a friend's book or program, or product, then there's a chance they may also find mine. Everyone wins. . When I see someone selling their product/book/program that's similar to mine, I think to myself, “get it, girl!” (Many of my colleagues are women, but you get the point.) . I have an abundance mindset. I don't see limits in who we can all reach and serve and inform about our books and products. . The minute we begin to feel fear or assume that the “market” is limited, we begin to self-destruct. It isn't true. A fear-based mindset around business, or money, or growth will stop you in your tracks. Don’t let it happen. . So, if you've got a friend – and you consider them a real friend – don't begrudge them success, even if it's in a line of business that may be competitive to yours. Be genuinely happy for them. . Trust me, there is room for everyone. . #dianeUNscripted @dianesanfilippo #entrepreneur #business #motivation #abundance #abundancemindset #paleo

I was listening to a recent “Happier” podcast episode with @gretchenrubin when this notion struck me. . So many people are into biohacking, which is fine, but I'm not. And, lots of folks get blood work done very often, even without a diagnosed condition that requires it, just for information. . Perhaps they're simply Questioner types, and that's cool. But, what if some of them are looking for problems where they don't exist? . I rarely get testing or lab work done on myself, not because I'm irresponsible about my health, but because I'm generally a very healthy person. Maybe something will crop up one day, but I'm not looking for problems I don't have. And then I'm not going to stress myself out to preemptively solve a problem I don't have, either. . Are you trying SO HARD to fix something that isn't broken? . Or, alternatively, are you trying to fix something when what you really need to do is stop doing something… stop trying so hard. Stop trying to manipulate your macros into oblivion. Stop trying to take every supplement that will “fix” a problem that doesn't even exist. . Of course plenty of what we work on *are* real problems to be solved. But, I bet we can all identify at least one that truly isn't. . Maybe that one is losing “that last 5 pounds,” or getting the extra sleep you assume you need. Maybe if you just relaxed a bit, you'd discover that you're doing just fine. . And, while positive changes in life *don't* simply happen by doing nothing, perhaps for some of you the act of doing “nothing,” or even just not the thing you thought was going to solve the problem, will be your solution. . Example: If tracking food makes you crazy and you don't have a problem with over eating, then don't track food. It's a solution to a problem that you don't have. . Just a thought for you tonight. . #dianeUNscripted @dianesanfilippo

“Not now.” “I’ve got too much going on.” “I’m too busy.” . Much like having a child (from what I’m told), starting or growing a business isn’t something that ever has a “right” or “perfect” time. . Because it’s hard, and it requires a lot of effort and some sacrifices. And most people don’t want to give up the way they’re doing things now in favor of moving towards their goals. . Or, you think there isn’t time in your already busy day. Or, you think it’ll take more time than you have right now. Or, you don’t think that doing something small each day will make much of a difference. . All of the above: FALSE. . Funny, it happens often that a close friend will ask me for a quick favor, typically with the disclaimer “I know you’re really busy so if you can’t do this don’t worry about it.” But then I do the quick favor for them amidst the other things I’ve got going on and it’s no big deal. I make it happen. . You have to find time in your life for things that matter to you. If it doesn’t matter to you, then fine, move along and realize that starting or growing a business may not be for you. But, if you’re one of those people who always seems to “make it happen,” then trust in yourself, because it is right for YOU. . In a recent video emailed to @Beautycounter consultants regarding building a team, this quote from the company’s founder, @greggrenfrew, really hit the nail on the head: “Look for the busiest person in the room, that’s the person who probably has the time to do it because they’re really driven and ambitious.” . Because it describes me, almost to a T. It also describes one of the most recently hired women on my team, about whom we commented when she applied, “but does she already have too much going on?” Turns out, she’s making it work just fine. . And so can you. The time will never truly be right, but it’s gotta be now, or soon, or time is going to pass you by and you’ll wish you had just plain started already. . #dianeUNscripted @dianesanfilippo #entrepreneur #girlboss #ladyboss #bossbabe #business #smallbiz #selfemployed #makeitwork #whatsburning #whatlightsyouup #beautycounter #takethejob
