So, I've had this sinus infection for a few days and have been avoiding dairy. And it hasn't been easy. And I can't tell if my body feels any differently from it because, well, all I feel is sick. However, while researching just why we're not “supposed to” eat dairy while sick — we all heard it made us more congested but I wanted to read some facts– I discovered an interesting article.
And while I don't like to take any dietary advice to heart 100%, I feel it's worth trying almost any diet alteration for a short period of time (within reasonable healthfulness of course) to see how one's body responds and reacts.
So…that said, I'm going to try giving up dairy for about 2 weeks. I'm not necessarily going to be reading all labels for any traces of milk or dairy, just avoiding the big guns and substituting almond milk, rice milk or some soy products where I feel like it. I am not certain exactly when I'll start as I have 1/2 gallon of milk and a few kinds of cheese in the fridge now, but when I do, I'll be sure to record any changes I notice in how I feel in a post here.

I’m joining you! I’m on Day 2, although I accidentally had feta cheese yesterday in a salad, so maybe I should count today as Day 1. I think this “no-cheese” thing will be tough for me!
I think if you slip here or there it won’t be a big deal. I think the main point for you, Steph, is seeing if your congestion is relieved with a drastic dairy reduction…you know? Good luck and keep me posted!
How did you end up feeling after doing this???
I feel pretty good. I think I miss the high protein snack that yogurt was for me frequently, but I think it upsets my stomach. I go through period of trying it again, then avoiding. It’s all about testing! See what feels good for each of us. I actually wanted to buy Organic Greek Style yogurt recently but couldn’t find it at Rainbow where I’d found it before 🙁
I had a great experience giving it up at the start of the year. My occasional indulgences with cheese/cream show heaviness in the chest, sinus congestion and bloating. Milk has been a write off for years, only experiencing severe abdominal pain/cramps. Higher fat content like whipping cream usually just results in slight bloating that is tolerable.
Butter was the hardest to let go, but I started making my own ghee which I really enjoy 🙂 I also substitute coconut milk for my coffee treats.
